Science!

Weekly Update - September 15

Good morning!  Our fifth week back at school was a busy one.  Also, Monday we are celebrating Constitution Day!  We will be wearing red, white, and blue!

Math
This week we wrapped up our Addition, Subtraction, and Place Value unit by reviewing and assessing our knowledge!  Major concepts we focused on included:

• place value relationships
• adding and subtracting using the algorithms
• reasoning through and solving multi-step word problems that included addition and subtraction

Students worked on concepts they still needed to master based on their data.

Please remember to practice math facts nightly with either cards or Xtra math at home.  Our next unit is Multiplication and Division.  Basic facts are the foundation of success in this unit!

Also remember that students are assigned Online Practice Buddies.  Although optional, these are great ways for students to practice concepts that are being taught at school.

Science

Students continued to work on their Motion and Design Unit with Mrs. Wood!

Social Studies

This week we started our first unit, Government!  Our Social Studies tab is updated with resources, games, and videos.  Check it out!  This week we...

• reviewed the powers and responsibilities of the three branches of the federal government
• reviewed checks and balances

Writing

In our fiction writing unit we focused on elaborating in our stories this week!  This means we thought about important and vivid details to add in to get our readers into the world of the story.  We also focused on elaborating on our characters by thinking about gestures, facial expressions, and actions!

Reading

In our Interpreting Characters unit we focused on developing strong ideas about characters!  We did this by:

• looking for repeated details and asking, "What could this symbolize or represent?"
• using precise language to describe characters and their traits
• looking for complexities within our characters

Good morning!
Please check out what we've been up to this past week...

Math
Next week will be out last week in our Addition, Subtraction, and Place Value unit.  So this week we have been working on...

• adding whole numbers with the traditional algorithm
• subtracting whole numbers with the traditional algorithms
• subtracting across zeros (i.e. 7,000 - 523)

We plan on assessing our learning in this unit on Friday, September 15.  Be on the lookout for review pages coming home!

Our next unit will be our Multiplication and Division unit.  Mastering basic multiplication facts are essential to this unit!  Students can practice with triangle cards or on Xtra Math at home.

Online Practice Buddies are also assigned as optional homework daily.  Although they are optional, they are highly encouraged.  These are a great way to practice concepts that are being taught in class.

Science
This week the Ninjas started their Motion and Design unit with Mrs. Wood!  They worked hard to begin to construct vehicles.

Writing
In writing this week we...

• planned out the scenes of our stories
• started our first drafts
• revised leads by looking at mentor authors

Reading
In our Interpreting Characters unit this week we...

• developed defensible ideas about characters by noticing text clues, our background knowledge on characters, and stating an inference
• we started reading assessments this week through our IRAs (independent reading assessments), and once we finish we will be able to begin thinking about long term reading goals!

Motion and Design

We kicked off science this week!  The Ninjas are in their Motion and Design unit with Mrs. Wood.  This week they began exploring tools they will be using for the unit.

Weekly Update - September 1

Good morning!  We had another full week of learning.  Curriculum Night was also a success.  Thank you to everyone who was able to make it.  If you were not able to make it, I am embedding our presentation into our weekly update!

Math
In math this week we continued to work on building our place value understanding through...

• rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand.
• constructing arguments using our understanding of place value.
• adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers using our understanding of place value.
• estimating sums and differences.

Next week we will be learning the traditional algorithms for addition and subtraction.  Feel free to practice these strategies at home!

Remember we also assign Online Practice Buddies as optional homework.  Mrs. Wood is so awesome and created a step-by-step guide on how to access the Practice Buddies at home!  Although optional, these are great resources for students and parents to practice math concepts being taught at school!

On the class Blog there are specific learning tutorials and games based on the learning target we are working on. Students can access these resources by clicking the "Math" page on the blog.

Science

Next week we will begin rotating classes for our science units.  The Ninjas will be heading to Mrs. Woods room to learn all about Motion and Design!  Science class will take place on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Writing

We are well into our first fiction writing unit!  Students focused on developing realistic fiction story ideas with believable characters.  This week we...

• developed believable characters by thinking about their internal and external traits.
• gave our characters motivations and struggles.
• planned out story arcs, thinking about how our fiction stories may go!

Reading

In our Interpreting Characters unit, we focused on...

• reading intensely in our books by creating movies in our heads as we read.
• thought about character traits and how to describe our characters.
• staying engaged and focused readers by talking about choosing a perfect reading spot so we can read the entire time.

Remember, your child is required to read 30 minutes nightly!
